Alex Ross Perry’s Pavements ‘Doc’ Gets A Trailer

The band in Pavements coming to MUBI

MUBI next month will release Alex Ross Perry‘s ‘doc’ Pavements, today we get a look at the official new trailer.

Perry’s  (Her Smell, Listen Up Phillip) documentary is about indie rockers Pavement. Is it a doc or a mock doc? The band reunites for their sold-out 2022 tour, a Hollywood biopic, stage musical. Even an museum exhibition emerge in tribute—blurring fact and fiction in a genre-bending chronicle of the band’s legacy.

Our writer Lexi Lane watched this at last year’s BFI London Film Festival. Lexi wrote “Perry’s Pavements could have alienated those unfamiliar with the titular band, but thankfully, it doesn’t. Instead, it allows them to learn, love, and be included in the jokes, which is really all you can ask for from a music documentary“.

This stars Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Kathryn Gallagher, Michael Esper, and Zoe Lister-Jones. Also  Stephen Malkmus, Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich.

An irreverent, genre-bending portrait of ’90s indie rock band Pavement, the film blends authentic archival footage, contemporary documentary moments, an ironic jukebox musical, a satirical Hollywood biopic, and playful mockumentary sequences, brilliantly collapsing the boundaries between reality and fiction.

As Pavement prepare for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour, the film captures surreal behind-the-scenes preparations for a musical adaptation of their songs, a museum dedicated entirely to the band’s legacy, and a knowingly clichéd Hollywood biopic starring Joe Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus.

Interwoven with genuine archival footage and featuring the band themselves alongside a cast of actors and comedians, Pavements humorously examines fan obsession, myth-making, and the cultural mechanics behind fame. This uniquely layered exploration challenges the traditional way stories about musicians are told with artistry, absurdity and humor, culminating in a refreshingly inventive and endearingly self-aware tribute to an unforgettable band.
