“It’s Sad to Be Away”: Chris Evans Addresses his Absence from Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans is feeling left out as Avengers: Doomsday continues to film.
Speaking to ScreenRant, the Captain America star seemingly confirmed his absence from the Avengers’ next saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While his Iron Man co-star Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, Evans maintains that he won’t be donning the iconic shield any time soon, insisting that his time with Captain America has ended.
The actor told ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley that while “it’s sad to not be back with the band”, he keeps in with the returning cast and the Russo Brothers: “I talk to them all the time. It’s where Pedro is right now”.
As production on Avengers: Doomsday continues, Evans is busy promoting Celine Song’s rom-com Materialists in New York, where he stars as a struggling actor alongside Dakota Johnson and new MCU front man Pedro Pascal. On the newest Avengers instalment, Evans said:
“I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.”
Evans made his MCU debut in Avengers: Endgame (2019) where he ed on the mantle of Captain America to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.
Avengers: Doomsday will see several actors make a return to the MCU. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, while Florence Pugh will return as Yelena alongside Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and the rest of the Thunderbolts/New Avengers. The film will see Pedro Pascal make his Avengers debut as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, ed by his Fantastic Four: The First Steps teammates, Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
It will also see the X-Men the MCU, welcoming Patrick Stewart as Charles Stewart/Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Ian McKellan as Magneto and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.
Though Marvel has never officially commented on Evans’ potential return, rumours that his Captain America would return alongside Hayley Atwell’s Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) as Fantastic Four (2005) character Johnny Storm might be Evan’s last appearance in the MCU. But with the multiverse in full effect…well, anything is possible.
Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on December 17, 2027.
