Caleb Landry-Jones in Harvest watch TrAILER (mubi)

Chaos reigns in Scotland as MUBI release the surreal Trailer for Athina Rachel Tsangari‘s genre bending Harvest.

Caleb Landry Jones stars alongside Harry Melling, Rosy McEwen, Arinzé Kene, Thalissa Teixeira, plus Frank Dillane. Harvest is based on Jim Grace’s 2013 novel about a nameless Scottish village on the verge of invasion.

The film played at this years Glasgow Film Festival last month and Calum Cooper watched it for us. Unfortunately he didn’t enjoy it and it seems very few of the press at the preview did either. Calum described the film “Harvest does contain samplings of appeal – it’s often atmospheric and its themes are thought-provoking and timely. But it’s a case of individual strengths that add up to an undercooked whole. With inconsistent craftsmanship and a protagonist who lacks any sense of agency, its otherwise irable ambitions sadly go unrealised“.

I’m really glad I missed this at Glasgow, it looks a mess.

Over seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears. In Tsangari’s spellbinding period piece, townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk (Caleb Landry-Jones) and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent (Harry Melling) are childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world. The agrarian community, entirely dependent on the land, is disrupted by three breeds of outsiders: the mapmaker (Arinze Kene); the company man (Frank Dillane) and migrants from another place, all representing the trauma of impending modernity. Combining beautifully textured storytelling with Sean Price Williams’ stunning cinematography, Harvest is a beautifully visceral and immersive cinematic experience.
